Global Health Corps Fellowship
The Global Health Corps Fellowship, partnered with the The Ladybugs Movement and the Community Pediatrics Program (CPP), to host a Hygiene Kit Making Day on June 16, 2018 in New York.
With a total of 26 amazing volunteers, they donated 485 fully stocked hygiene kits to shelters in the South Bronx.
A HUGE THANK YOU to our ladybug Gigi Ady, for spearheading the establishment of The Ladybugs Movement in New York to help improve the health of homeless women by increasing their access to hygiene products.
This event would not have been possible without the contributions made by the Global Health Fellowship.
The Global Health Corps Fellowship cohort was able to raise a total of $1,231 and the Global Health Corps donated a total of $595.

"Our mission is to mobilize a global community of emerging leaders to build the movement for health equity. We are building a network of young changemakers who share a common belief:
Health is a human right."
"The Community Pediatric Programs (CPP) fulfill a vital, philanthropic mission. We serve New York City's homeless and under-insured families by providing compassionate, family-centered health care to children regardless of parental income or citizenship.
Through the CPP, children and their families can access routine health care services."
Why is this Important?
According to the Coalition for the Homeless, in March 2018, 62,974 people slept in homeless shelters every night in New York City. On any given day, more than 60,000 people are homeless in NYC. Homelessness has reached numbers not seen since the Great Depression, increasing by more than 80% in the last 10 years, and the major reason for this among families and children is a lack of affordable and safe housing.
The South Bronx is one of the poorest congressional districts in the country. More than half of Bronx renters are cost burdened (more than 30% of their income is spent on housing) and one third are severely cost burdened (more than half of their income is spent on housing). The South Bronx also has the highest rate of overcrowding in NYC and double the rate nationwide. Families living in the South Bronx experience homelessness at a rate that is three times higher than NYC as a whole and six times higher than the national level.
Women who are homeless in NYC experience a significant amount of stressors. Hygiene products are not often provided in shelters and poor hygiene can lead to negative physical and mental health outcomes.
On average, women spend about 4 to 8 dollars a month on feminine hygiene products, which sums to around 96 dollars a year. This number is not including other hygiene products such as toilet paper, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, and toothpaste.
